Abstract

This study examined changes in students’ motivation to learn English following supervised voice interaction with ChatGPT at MTs Assalam Sidrap, Indonesia. A quantitative pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involved all 22 students in the selected eighth-grade class. Four treatment meetings progressed from demonstration to simple questions, guided conversations, and freer oral interaction using a researcher-supervised laptop. Motivation was measured with a 25-item, five-point questionnaire covering interest, participation, confidence, enjoyment, and effort and engagement. The source thesis reported expert review and internal-consistency coefficients of .826 at pretest and .882 at posttest. Motivation scores increased descriptively from 85.86 (SD = 10.93) to 89.55 (SD = 11.90), with a mean paired increase of 3.68 points. Thirteen students improved, seven declined, and two remained unchanged. Confidence and enjoyment showed the largest descriptive increases. However, the overall difference was not statistically significant, t(21) = 1.511, p = .146, 95% CI [?1.39, 8.75], Cohen’s dz = 0.32. The null hypothesis was therefore not rejected. These findings suggest a modest positive descriptive tendency, with considerable individual variation, rather than a demonstrated overall motivational influence. Interpretation is limited by the small single-class sample, four-meeting intervention, absence of a comparison group, and reliance on self-report. Longer controlled studies should examine sustained motivation, individual exposure, and the distinction between enjoyment of AI interaction and continuing effort to learn English.
